Amazon's Alexa: The End of Celebrity Voices and the Dawn of AI Integration

Amazon's Alexa, the popular voice assistant, is undergoing a significant change. The voices of renowned celebrities such as Shaquille O’Neal, Melissa McCarthy, and Samuel L. Jackson, which were once available for users to download, are being phased out. The feature, which was initiated with Jackson's voice in 2019 at a mere cost of .99 cents, saw a recent price hike to $4.99. However, Amazon has now decided to discontinue these celebrity voices.
In December, Amazon informed its users about the impending removal of Jackson's voice. Those who have already purchased it can continue to use the feature until June 7, 2023. A note on Amazon’s purchase page for Jackson’s voice states, “This voice is no longer available for purchase. Customers who previously purchased the experience may continue to use the skill until April 2023 by saying ‘Hey Samuel.’” Similar notifications will be sent to customers who purchased the voices of McCarthy and O’Neal, four months before they become unavailable on September 30, 2023.
Despite the removal of these voices, Amazon has confirmed that it will not automatically issue refunds to consumers who purchased the voice. However, a spokesperson stated in an email to Gizmodo, “After three years, we’re winding down celebrity voices. Customers will be able to continue using these voices for a limited time, and can contact our customer service team for a refund.”
Amazon will continue to offer a variety of voice options, including American, Australian, British, Canadian, and Indian accents. The company, however, has not provided further details regarding its decision to remove the celebrity voice feature.
This decision comes in the wake of several spending cuts made by Amazon since Andy Jassy took over as CEO in July last year. Jassy has been critical of some of Amazon’s investments, including its Alexa product, which he claimed resulted in $5 million in operating losses in recent years. Amazon also carried out mass layoffs earlier this year, affecting 18,000 employees, with nearly 2,000 of those being part of the Alexa and Echo product division.
Leaked documents suggest that Amazon may be considering the use of AI, such as ChatGPT, to enhance its voice feature. The former celebrity voice option, featuring Jackson, McCarthy, and O’Neal, was limited to simple information requests like shopping lists, reminders, or skills. However, the use of AI chatbots could potentially expand results across videos and audio.
While it remains unclear whether Amazon will officially incorporate AI into its Alexa, Jassy hinted at the possibility during an earnings call last week. He mentioned that the company was building a “much larger and much more generalized and capable” large language model (LLM) underneath Alexa. “I think that’s going to really rapidly accelerate our vision of becoming the world’s best personal assistant,” Jassy said during the call. “I think there’s a significant business model underneath it.”
